What is

Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates, often simply referred to as Pilates, is a comprehensive body conditioning method that emphasizes balance, concentration, control, centeredness, flow, and precision. It was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer, who meticulously designed this exercise system to fuse elements of Western and Eastern philosophies of physical fitness and mental control. The original intention behind Pilates was not only to rehabilitate injured soldiers during World War I but also to create a method of training that could strengthen the mind and body in harmonious unity.

The History Behind Classical Pilates

Joseph Pilates believed strongly in the connection between physical and mental health, positing that modern lifestyle, bad posture, and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health. After moving to the United States in the 1920s, he opened a studio in New York City with his wife, Clara, where they taught and refined the Pilates method. Their technique attracted a diverse clientele, ranging from ballet dancers who sought to improve their posture and control, to individuals wanting to restore their health and well-being.

Classical Pilates, as it came to be known, refers strictly to the original exercises and sequences that Joseph Pilates taught, as well as the use of equipment he designed, like the Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair. This authentic form maintains the integrity of the method as a holistic discipline, focusing on the complexity of movements rather than the modern adaptations or variations that often simplify or alter the original work.

How Classical Pilates

Relates to Health

The comprehensive nature of Classical Pilates — with its focus on core strength, flexibility, balanced muscle development, and improved posture — offers numerous health benefits. It is a gentle but challenging form of exercise suitable for all ages and fitness levels, promoting not only physical strength but also mental resilience. The principles of concentration and controlled movements enhance body awareness, reducing the risk of injury and contributing to overall well-being.

Pilates is especially beneficial for improving core stability, which in turn supports spine health and alleviates back pain. The precision and control required to execute Pilates exercises effectively engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, promoting efficient movement patterns that are beneficial both in athletic performance and daily life.

In the realm of mental health, the focused and mindful practice of Pililes can act as a form of moving meditation, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. The emphasis on breathing techniques also improves lung capacity and circulation, showcasing Pilates as a holistic approach to health that aligns with Joseph Pilates' original vision.

As we continue to navigate the challenges of modern living, the timeless principles of Classical Pilates offer a path to physical and mental harmony, proving that Joseph Pilates' method is as relevant and powerful today as it was a century ago. Whether through rehabilitation or the pursuit of optimal health, Pilates presents a balanced approach to well-being that is both transformative and empowering.

My Journey Through Classical Pilates Teacher Training at Classical Kulture

Embarking on the journey to become a Classical Pilates instructor through Classical Kulture's Teacher Training has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Rooted in the legacy of Joseph Pilates and brought to life by a team of dedicated and knowledgeable instructors, this training has deeply enriched my understanding of Pilates, both as a practice and as a philosophy.

Rooted in Legacy

Under the guidance of the remarkable Alexa Idama, Michelle N. Leach, and Patty Dean, my fellow apprentices and I delved into the original teachings of Joseph Pilates. Our curriculum was meticulously crafted to honor the classical work as taught by Joseph Pilates and his esteemed students – Romana Kryzanowska, Kathy Grant, Jay Grimes, Lolita San Miguel, and Carola Trier. Every lesson, every exercise carried the essence of Pilates' intention: a harmonious unity of mind, body, and spirit.

Acknowledging My Instructors

Alexa Idama, a certified Classical Pilates Teacher with over 20 years of experience, led us with unwavering commitment and passion. Alexa's story of how Pilates transformed her life and her dedication to sharing this method with underrepresented communities inspired me deeply. Her comprehensive training under Joel Crosby and continued education with senior instructors like Blossom Crawford and Jay Grimes have made her a formidable leader in our training journey.

Michelle N. Leach brought her New York spirit, patient nature, and profound knowledge to each session. Transitioning from real estate to Pilates, Michelle's journey resonated with many of us, proving it's never too late to follow your passion. Her dedication to the classical method and authenticity of Pilates teaching enriched our learning experience immeasurably.

Patty Dean, leading the West Coast Training, brought over 20 years of teaching the classical Pilates method to our training. Patty's expertise in addressing body imbalances and creating life-changing Pilates programs added an invaluable dimension to our education.

The Program

From the comprehensive 800-hour training covering all the essential Pilates apparatus to the in-depth 100-hour Mat Training, each step of this journey was designed to equip us with the skills and knowledge to teach Pilates authentically and effectively. The training emphasized the classical system, staying true to the original exercises and sequences because, as we learned, this work genuinely produces remarkable results across a variety of bodies.

Gratitude and Forward Motion

I am beyond grateful to Alexa, Michelle, Patty, and the entire Classical Kulture team for not just teaching Pilates but for living its principles and instilling in us a deep respect for its legacy. As I move forward, ready to share the transformative power of Pilates with others, I carry with me not only comprehensive knowledge but a profound appreciation for those who guided me here.

To my teachers – thank you for imparting your wisdom, spirit, and love for Pilates. To my fellow apprentices – here's to our continued journey of growth and learning. And to future students – I am excited to pass on the legacy of Classical Pilates, as taught by the great Joseph Pilates and beautifully preserved by Classical Kulture.

Together, We Continue the Legacy

In gratitude,

Marie Sow
